What is AEO? Answer engine optimization explained in plain English

In short

AEO (answer engine optimization) is making your content easy for search engines and AI tools to pull out as the direct answer to a question. That includes Google’s AI summaries, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, and chatbots like ChatGPT. SEO gets you on the list of results. AEO gets you quoted as the answer.

AEO in one sentence

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An “answer engine” is any tool that gives people an answer instead of a list of links. AEO is the work you do so that answer comes from you.

From a list of links to one answer

For years, searching Google meant getting ten blue links and clicking around. Now Google often writes a short answer at the top of the page, and many people stop there.

In a 2025 Pew Research study, about 18% of the Google searches people made produced an AI summary. When one appeared, people clicked a regular result in only 8% of visits, compared with 15% when it didn’t. If you’re not part of the answer, fewer people ever see you.

A simple example

Example · A plumbing company

A homeowner asks, how do I shut off the water to my house? Google or their phone’s assistant gives a short, step by step answer and names the website it came from.

Two plumbers have pages on this. One buries the answer in the sixth paragraph of a long story about their company. The other opens with three clear steps. The second plumber is far more likely to be the source, and to be the name that homeowner remembers when the pipe actually bursts.

What answer engines look for

  • A direct answer right up front. Answer the question in the first two or three sentences, then add detail below.
  • Headings written as real questions. “How much does a roof replacement cost?” is easier to match than “Pricing information.”
  • Steps and lists. Numbered steps and short lists are easy to lift out and show as an answer.
  • Plain, specific language. Real numbers, real timeframes, real places. Vague marketing language rarely gets quoted.
  • Labels for computers, called schema. Schema is a bit of hidden code that tells search engines “this is a question and this is its answer” or “this is our business address.” Most website builders and SEO plugins can add it for you.

Before and after

Here’s the same answer on a roofing company’s website, written two ways.

Before · Hard to quote

“At Summit Roofing, we believe every home deserves the best. With over 20 years of experience and a commitment to quality craftsmanship, our team works with you to find the right solution for your budget and needs.”

After · Easy to quote

How much does a roof replacement cost in Denver?
Most asphalt shingle roof replacements we do in the Denver area cost between $12,000 and $20,000 for an average-sized home. The final price depends on the size of your roof, the materials you choose and how many layers need to come off.

The second version answers a real question, uses the words people search, and gives a specific range. That’s what answer engines are looking for. (The prices here are just an example. Use your own real numbers.)

How AEO is different from SEO

AEO doesn’t replace SEO. It builds on it. Google still has to trust your site before it will quote it. And there’s a third piece, GEO, which is about getting AI tools to recommend your business by name. See how all three fit in SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

How to start with AEO

  1. Write down the 10 questions customers ask most. Check your emails, sales calls and reviews. These are your best AEO topics.
  2. Answer each one on the most relevant page. Use the question as a heading and answer it in the first two or three sentences.
  3. Add a short FAQ to your main service pages. Keep each answer short and specific.
  4. Add schema. An SEO plugin can mark up your FAQs and business details so search engines understand them.
  5. Test it. Search your questions on Google and ask ChatGPT. Note who gets quoted, and what their answer looks like.

Common questions about AEO

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap a lot. SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO shapes your content so search engines and AI tools can use it as the direct answer. Good AEO starts with good SEO.

Does AEO work for voice search?

Yes. Voice assistants read out one answer, not ten links, so short and direct answers matter even more there.

Do I need special software for AEO?

No. Most AEO is about how you write: clear questions, direct answers, specific details. An SEO plugin helps with schema, but the writing matters most.
