SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what’s the difference and which do you need?
In short
SEO helps you show up in search results. AEO helps you become the direct answer to a question. GEO helps you get named when people ask AI for a recommendation. They build on each other, so almost every business should start with SEO basics and add the other two as it goes.
The short version
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| The goal | Show up in the results | Be the answer | Be the business AI recommends |
| Where it shows | Google’s regular results and map listings | AI summaries, featured answers, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google’s AI Mode |
| What people type | “plumber Denver” | “how do I shut off my water?” | “who’s the best plumber in Denver for old homes?” |
| What wins | Relevant pages and a strong reputation | Clear, direct answers | Being specific and talked about across the web |
One business, all three
Let’s follow Maria, who runs Sweet Spot, a custom cake bakery in Denver.
SEO · Showing up
Someone searches custom birthday cake Denver. Sweet Spot appears on the first page of Google and in the map listings because Maria has a dedicated page for custom birthday cakes, a complete Google Business Profile and lots of reviews.
AEO · Being the answer
Someone searches how far ahead should I order a custom cake? Google’s AI summary answers “about two weeks for most custom cakes” and links to Sweet Spot, because Maria’s FAQ answers that exact question in one clear sentence.
GEO · Being recommended
Someone asks ChatGPT, what are the best bakeries in Denver for a gluten-free wedding cake? ChatGPT names Sweet Spot, because her website says she specializes in gluten-free cakes, local wedding blogs have featured her, and her reviews mention it again and again.
Same bakery, same website, three different ways customers find her.
How they fit together
Think of it like a shop on a busy street.
- SEO is the building and the sign out front. Without it, nobody can find you at all.
- AEO is the helpful staff who answer questions at the door. People remember who helped them.
- GEO is word of mouth. It’s what people say about you when you’re not in the room, and it’s what AI listens to.
You need the building before the staff matters, and both before the word of mouth turns into customers. That’s why the order is usually SEO first, then AEO, then GEO.
What all three have in common
- A website that clearly says what you do, who it’s for and where.
- Helpful content that answers real customer questions.
- Reviews and mentions from other people and websites.
- Consistent business details everywhere you’re listed.
Do these well and you’re making progress on all three at once. You don’t need three separate strategies.
Which one do you need?
- If you don’t show up on Google for what you sell, start with SEO. Everything else depends on it.
- If customers ask you the same questions over and over, add AEO. Answer those questions on your site.
- If buyers in your industry compare options before choosing, add GEO. That’s exactly where people now ask AI for a short list.

Common questions
Do I need to do SEO, AEO and GEO separately?
No. They share the same foundation. A clear website, helpful answers and a strong reputation help with all three at once.
Which one should I start with?
SEO. AI tools and answer engines lean on the same signals, so solid SEO basics make AEO and GEO much easier.
Is AI search going to replace Google?
Nobody knows for sure. What’s clear is that people now use both, often for the same purchase. The safest plan is to show up in both places, which is exactly what SEO, AEO and GEO do together.
